Product testing

Raw Materials

The polymer itself determines to a large extent the properties of the pipe system. It is therefore important to be able to determine the basic polymer characteristics. Becetel® has an arsenal of tests and often specific equipment at its disposition for this purpose.

The test we perform:

  • Tensile strength at break or yield (ISO 527)
  • Tensile elongation at break or yield (ISO 527)
  • Tensile modulus (ISO 527)
  • Density (ISO 1183-1)
  • Flexural properties – bending test (ISO 178)
  • Charpy impact strength (ISO 179)
  • IZOD impact strength (ISO 180)
  • Melt mass flow rate (ISO 1133-1)
  • Vicat Softening temperature (ISO 306, ISO 2507)
  • Oxidation Induction Time (OIT) (ISO 11357-6)
  • Carbon black and pigment dispersion (ISO 18553)
  • Shore hardness (ISO 868)
  • Glass transition temperature (ISO 11357-2)
  • Process temperature (ISO 18373-1)
  • Enthalpy of fusion (ISO 18373-2), melting or crystallization (ISO 11357-3)

Pipes

Becetel® originated as a research centre for the use of plastics piping in the utilities industry. Since then, the testing of plastics piping has remained our core business. Over the years our original field of activities has expanded to include the construction, building and other industries. It includes e.g. drainage and sewerage, central and floor heating, cooling, hot and cold water supply in buildings, extruded window and door profiles, accessories for piping systems (manholes and inspection chambers, infiltration boxes) and many other forms of pipes.
We offer a wide range of services and expertise in various testing domains like:

  • Hydrostatic pressure testing
  • Decohesion testing
  • Stress crack resistance
  • Rapid crack propagation
  • Material properties

Valves

A valve is an important (safety) component in distribution pipelines. Becetel® has extensive expertise in the testing of polyethylene and polyamide ball valves for utilities, especially in gas distribution networks.

The test we perform:

  • Resistance to hydrostatic pressure (ISO 1167)
  • Leaktightness of seat and packing (e.g. EN 1555-4 annex A)
  • Pressure drop (ISO 17778)
  • Operating torque (ISO 8233)
  • Stop resistance (ISO 8233)
  • Actuation mechanism resistance (ISO 8233)
  • Resistance to bending between supports (EN 12100)
  • Thermal cycling resistance (EN 12119)
  • Leaktightness under bending with thermal cycling (EN 1704)
  • Tensile loading (e.g. EN 1555-4 annex B, ISO 4437-4 annex B)
  • Leaktightness under and after bending applied to the operating mechanism (EN 1680)
  • Impact loading resistance (EN 1705)
  • Leaktightness angular range (NF T 54-972)

These tests allow us to determine most of the specifications from EN 1555, EN 12201, ISO 4437, ISO 4427 and ISO 16486 to help you evaluate your product.

Elastomers

As gaskets, packings or seals are an integral part of a piping system, Becetel® has also built up expertise in the testing of elastomers. For the evaluation of primary characteristics such as hardness, permanent deformation, tensile properties and ageing, please contact us.
For the more specialized (and less common) tests such as stress relaxation or ozone resistance, we work together with laboratories that have more expertise in this area.

The test we perform:

  • IRHD-M hardness (ISO 48)
  • Tensile strength and elongation at break (ISO 37)
  • Compression set (ISO 815-1)
  • Ageing (ISO 188)
  • Volume change (ISO 1817)
  • Preparation and conditioning (ISO 23529)

These tests allow us to determine most of the specifications from EN 549, EN 681-1/-2 or EN 682 to help you evaluate your product.

ISO 9080

The ISO 9080 standard describes a method for predicting the long-term hydrostatic strength of thermoplastic materials by statistical extrapolation of the pipe rupture data from hydrostatic pressure tests. We have several water tanks and many test stations so that we can perform the necessary hydrostatic pressure tests simultaneously at different temperatures.
Becetel® has developed a software package to perform this so called Standard Extrapolation Method (SEM) analysis described in the ISO 9080.

The test we perform:

  • Resistance to hydrostatic pressure (ISO 1167)
  • Long-term hydrostatic strength by Standard Extrapolation Method (ISO 9080)

These tests allow compound and pipe manufacturers to determine the MRS (Minimum Required Strength) classification (ISO 12162) of their product.

A more detailed description of the Standard Extrapolation Method and ordering information can be found on semdisk.
